It feels so strange to be writing a regular post rather than one for RoW80 on a Sunday, but I’ll give it a whirl, anyway, especially since I missed a post twice this week, if I remember correctly. The weekend in general had been an odd one for me. Not only did I fail to post my blog yesterday, but I also wound up missing my 750words, too! This is pretty disappointing, because I did have a lovely little streak going on, but I’m not too upset since I was too late to sign up for the September challenge. I will be doing October, though, so let’s hope I don’t mess up anything there!
I think that a day off like that, whether intentional or not, is sometimes good for a person, because this morning I think I came up with a breakthrough on the fairy tale concept I’ve been playing around with. It’s developing into a collection of related short stories, and the concept, in general, is basically taking the classical fairy tale heroines, cyber-punking it up a little, and placing them all in a sort of high security correctional facility. Shades of Girl, Interrupted with tints of Sucker Punch in the vein of American McGee’s Alice, maybe even a little Mad Max and 1984. The story I’ve developed the most so far involved a young woman, Goh D. Lox, in for habitual breaking and entering and kleptomania, plans her escape from her detention, and everything changes for her when she comes across a cabin in the woods surrounding the facility, which seems like the perfect place to hide out for a day or two…
My main question right now, then, is whether or not I want to start working on these right now, or save them for my NaNo project. NaNoWriMo is still pretty far away, though, and I kind of want to get the Goh D. Lox yarn out while it’s still fresh in my head, and I’ve already slowly been working on something for Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and I even know that the whole thing is going to end with a take on Sleeping Beauty.
So, despite the disappointing weekend so far, my brain has come back around for me this morning spectacularly and I’m really excited to see how this project works out for me. If anything, I know there’s a few great short stories in there, if not a whole collection, but there’s only one way to know for sure! I’m off to go write it and hopefully have no more breaks in my 750 words a day. Happy Sunday, everyone!
